Full Description
This course is designed to provide law enforcement officers with a practical understanding of use of force decision-making through the lens of human performance under stress and officer wellness. It will enhance law enforcement officers’ ability to make legally sound, effective decisions in high-stress, rapidly evolving situations while improving long-term performance, resilience, and overall wellness.

The training integrates three critical components:
• Use of force law and decision-making
• Human performance under stress
• Officer wellness, fitness, and recovery

Through structured instruction, guided discussion, and scenario-based application, officers will gain a deeper understanding of how stress impacts perception, cognition, and motor skills during critical incidents. The course bridges the gap between policy and performance by focusing on how decisions are actually made under pressure—not just how they are evaluated after the fact.

In addition, the course emphasizes the direct connection between officer wellness and performance. Topics including fitness, nutrition, recovery, and stress management are addressed as essential components of decision-making, risk reduction, and long-term career sustainability.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course, students will be able to:
• Define legal standards governing use of force, including Graham v. Connor and Tennessee v. Garner
• Explain the physiological and psychological effects of stress on perception, reaction time, and decision-making

• Articulate use of force decisions clearly and effectively following critical incidents
• Identify strategies to manage stress and maintain performance under pressure
