Who Should Attend:
Investigators and law enforcement officers are involved in enforcement activities associated with search warrants, warrantless searches, interviews, eyewitness identifications, and nontestimonial identification orders.

Course Goal
To provide the skills necessary to conduct enforcement activities associated with search warrants, warrantless searches, interviews, eyewitness identifications, and nontestimonial identification orders.

Course Objectives:
The student will be able to:
- Draft a valid search warrant.
- Lawfully execute a search warrant.
- Lawfully conduct warrantless searches.
- Conduct interviews lawfully during an investigative detention or arrest situation.
- Apply noncustodial interview procedures to obtain lawful confessions.
- Conduct nontestimonial and eyewitness identification procedures in accordance with applicable law.
- Conduct a valid investigative stop and frisk and a lawful arrest, using proper basis, parameters, and use of force.
- Identify the steps an officer may take to defend against a liability action.  

Methodologies
This course utilizes discussion, video scenarios, practical exercises, programmed texts, student readings, and case studies.

Resources Required
Attendance is required at all class sessions. The student must participate in class and practical exercises, successfully prepare search warrants, complete homework assignments, and successfully attain a minimum score of 75% on the final examination.

Students must have a copy of the Arrest, Search, and Investigation in North Carolina, 6th Edition, 2021, Book ISBN-13: 978-1642380415, written by Robert Farb and published by the UNC School of Government.  Please bring a laptop to class.
